What is the difference between the Instructor Edition and the Department Edition?
The Instructor Edition is a package of scenario design tools that provide an instructor with full smoke, fire, and animation/simulation capabilities to create standalone scenarios that can be distributed via PowerPoint or the web (HTML files). The Department version adds multiplayer functionality, inter-player communication, dynamic and scripted instructor control of the evolving scenario, on-site training, and much more.
Why is CommandSim Fire: Department Edition better than other simulation systems?
CommandSim Fire was designed by firefighters and technologists to fill critical gaps in today's software offered for strategy and tactics training. Compare the main features of CommandSim Fire with any other simulation systems. No other system combines the
- flexibility and power to design the "right" level of detail to meet your training needs
- multi-player/multi-instructor interactivity
- ease of creating scenarios localized to your response area
- licensing distribution freedom, and
- superior customer and technical support.
Are there special skills required to create scenarios?
Scenario designers need to be good planners. While the software is not limited at all, novice designers sometimes try to accomplish too much as their first few scenarios. It is best for designers to focus on the basics while first learning to build scenarios. No special tools are required beyond Flash, a digital camera, and a basic image editing program.
How long does it take to create a scenario typically?
Most of the time goes into planning the navigation, photographing the scene, and editing the images (if necessary). Once these are done, it may take a day to put them into the program, for a basic, single-family residence.
What special skills are required to run exercises?
The instructors who control exercises need to be facile at the keyboard/mouse, as they have to both monitor what the participants are doing, and evolve the scenario according to the exercise script. As well, CommandSim Fire lets you create scripts to automate all activities.
Especially for exercises with more than a few people, when possible, it is best to have one person devoted to controlling the exercise, and another person evaluating/instructing the participants.
What are the technical computer requirements to run the software?
The technical requirements can easily be met by computers even a couple of years old.
The server must conform to requirements of the Flash Media Interactive Server. Click here to see these requirements.
The Scenario Designer software requires a computer running Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 or higher, with a processor at 2 GHz or higher, and 512Mb RAM (1 Gb disk space).
The Instructor and Participant software run in a typical browser (IE 6.0+, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera) that supports the Flash 8 Player plug-in. The plug-in is available in Windows, Mac, and Linux. Minimum requirements are those of the Flash 8 Player, which can be viewed by clicking here.
What is the maximum number of simultaneous users the system can handle?
The number of simultaneous users is theoretically unlimited, however, the Flash Media Server can support hundreds or more concurrent users.
Can the system be run on a single computer or must I have access to a network or the Internet?
You can run the program on a single computer if you have the Flash Media Server installed on your computer, and you make minor modifications to the application files. Email us to obtain a single user version of the programs.
